Word roots are usually paired with a suffix andsometimes with a prefix. Word roots often need a vowel, called acombining vowel,to link them to a prefix or suffix. Thecombining vowel simply makes the term easier to pronounce.Prefixes.Prefixescome before a word root and give more information about the term described by the wordroot and the suffix. For example, adding the prefix “hypo-” (lack or under) to the word root “therm/” (heat) and the3suffix “-ia” (condition) creates the termhypothermia, which means an abnormally low body temperature. On theother hand, adding the prefix “hyper-” (excess) instead of “hypo-” creates the wordhyperthermia, which means anabnormally high body temperature, the opposite of hypothermia.Suffixes.Suffixesalmost always come after the word root (although occasionally a prefix and suffix combined canmake a term) and usually qualify the term as a condition, a procedure, or a symptom. For example, adding the suffix “-logy”(the study of) to the combining form “path/o” (disease) creates the termpathology, which means the study of disease.Breaking it DownWhen defining a term, it is sometimes easier to start with the definition of the suffix and then move on to the word root:pathology = path/o (disease) + -logy (study of)Definition: the study of diseaseIf the term contains both a prefix and a suffix, break the term down to define the suffix first, then the prefix, andfinally the root:arrhythmia = a- (without) + rrhythm/o (rhythm) + -ia (condition)Definition: condition of being without a normal heartbeat rhythmIn other words, arrhythmia is an abnormal variation from the normal heartbeat.4
