We hope that you are all welland that you enjoyed last month’s collection of models and managed to get some time at the benchto work on your own projects. Don’t forget that we are interested in seeing what you do so that wecan create a readers’s models page each month. Get in touch via the email address that you willfind on page 2 of this issue and you never know, you may see one of you models in a future editionof MAI…Last month we had the pleasure of attending the Nuremburg Toy Fair. Though I’ve been in this industry foralmost twenty years now, this was personally my first visit to this massive event and so I was both excitedand intrigued by the possibilities of both what I would see and who I would meet in those vast exhibitionhalls. Having now been there, I wasn’t disappointed on either count…As an intrepid young modeller, I would eagerly wait for the latest edition of Scale Aircraft Modelling or Scale Models to appearin the local newsagent during the early months of the year, because I knew that they would list all of the new kits that would bereleased. Unlike today where there are seemingly endless lists of new manufacturers to release an avalanche of new kits eachmonth, there were really only a handful of companies from which we could buy new kits, paints and decals. The aftermarket wasHAll the Fun of the Fair…“Though I’ve been in this industry for almost twenty years now, this was personally my first visit to this massive event and so I wasboth excited and intrigued”4MODEL AIRPLANE INTERNATIONAL -April 2015nowhere to be seen, so when you saw the list, you knew that was it forthe year and so those first glances down the pages were very exciting! Iremember to this day, running to the local phone box to call a friend (wehad no phone in the house…) to tell him that Matchbox were to release a1:72 Victor K.2; odd then, that 35 years on I should visit Germany to seethat very same kit being rereleased by Revell - and yes, I’m still excited tosee it!Of course it’s not quite the same now as it was back then; the Internetand all of its social media outlets has allowed the world to find outabout new kits almost the second the are announced. You can walkaround these events, take a picture on your smart hone and upload itto Facebook or Twitter or a modelling forum, in seconds rather than theweeks the journalists had to wait in 1980. Immediacy is the name of thegame, today. And yet some models still slip through the net.Whilst wandering around the main modelling hall I came across theAcademy stand and there, for all to see, was a brand-new 1:72 F-4JPhantom in the colours of ’Showtime 100’. A while back, Academy hadannounced that they would be releasing such a kit, but the trail had gonecold and nothing more was said about it, many believing that it had beencancelled. But there it was! Even online, there had been precious littletalk about the kit and seemingly little in the way of photographic evidencethat it existed - maybe those that visited the show simply didn’t see it?This month we have created an in-depth look at the new items thatwe saw in Germany, many of which we will be looking at in depth overthe coming year. Amongst those new releases, there are of course somereally exciting announcements; we are particularly interested in thenew Revell 1:32 Fw190, 1:72 C-54 and Hawk as we are, the reissue ofMonogram’s classic AC-47. Special Hobby’s 1:32 Tempest family looksvery promising too, as does their Grumman Guardian and Zoukei-Mura’sexcellent - and complex - 1:48 Horton and 1:32 Do335. Add to that list araft of wonderful-looking Airfix kits (including their Avro Shackleton MR.2)and our year is already filling up!PICK OF THE MONTH…The Best Just Got Better…I’m sure we can allremember those headydays as a child, eagerlyleafing through a newkit catalogue, dreamingof the kits that wewould build, if we couldafford them. For me, itwas always the Airfixcatalogue - usuallyborrowed from a friend -that caused excitement,Roy Cross artworkshining out from eachand every page. How Iloved those catalogues…Over the last fewyears, Airfix have takenthe release of these once sought after publications seriouslyenough to not only bring them back, but do so with such style, that they are simply the best model kit catalogues availableanywhere. The 2015 catalogue has just arrived and I have to say thatit is another corker! A massive 148 pages cover everythingthat Airfix produce from children’s ‘Quickbuild’ kits through tothe extraordinary 1:24 Typhoon, each and every page beingcrammed full of beautiful box-art, written information andbuilt models. Add to that mix, some wonderful double pagespreads to get the juices flowing and the pleasure that a fewhours with this new book are there for all to see!One slight issue that some older modellers - such as myself!- may have is the lack of Roy Cross artwork, which in themain has been all but replaced with new, computer generatedimages. Though this seems like a shame, the quality of AdamTooby’s work is such that not only does his work ape the styleand excitement of Roy’s, in many ways the detail possiblefrom each of the new paintings is such, that they feel likereference works in their own right. Indeed, I’m of the opinionthat Airfix box art is now the best in the world and seeing somuch of it in one publication, is a real treat.Irrespective of you being a fan of the Airfix brand or not,we really must recommend that you get hold of one of thesecatalogues - if only for the pleasure that you will derive fromflicking through its pages. The fact that many of the kitscontained within it are every bit as impressive, only serves toheighten that pleasure and our regard for a brand that wasteetering on the brink for many years, but today, is very muchon its way to leading the field. If you would like to purchase one of these catalogues, please visit the Airfix Website - www.airfix.com/search/?q=kit+catalogue - where you will find copies on sale. Also In This Issue…Following our look at the Toy Fair, we bring you are a fine collection ofnew models to enjoy - almost all of which are in-depth looks at new kitsreadily available to the enthusiast. First up with have Haris Ali’s take onthe new Airfix Gnat. Those of you who have follow Haris’ work over thelast few years will know that his passion is WWI biplanes, but occasionallyhe can be persuaded to build a jet or two, this being just one of thoseoccasions. For the modeller looking for a simple to build, accurate littlemodel that offers a raft of different schemes, the Gnat is a great choice:add detail and you have the perfect canvass on which to practice yourskills.Over the last few years Eduard have wowed the modelling world withtheir 1:48 Spitfire family and so we are delighted to see Drewe Mantonbuild a very early sample of their brand-new Mk.VIII. Essentially the earlierkit with new fuselage, wings and smaller details, this new kit is every bitas impressive. When you hear a reviewer announce that it’s the “bestmodel ever”, you know that you are in for a treat…The third of our new kits in this issue comes in the form of HobbyBoss’1:48 P-61 Black Widow. With only the venerable Monogram kit forcompany in this scale, the release of a new 1:48 kit was met with someexcitement. Mike Williams take time away from post-war jets to see if thatexcitement was justified. So this then is the April issue of your favourite magazine. We hopeyou enjoy the features and as usual, if you have any comments, want toshow us what you do or feel that you would like to contribute in any way, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Until next time - take care and enjoyyour modelling!Spencer Pollard“I’m of the opinion that Airfix box art is nowthe best in the world and seeing so much of itin one publication, is a real treat”Issue 117- www.modelairplaneinternational.com5
