And it canbe built for gas or coal firing. 189 beautifully produced pages with full drawings, sketchesAnatomy of a Narrow Gauge BaldwinManning•£24.05Baldwin Works Number 37399 of 1911 was a 60 cm gauge2-4-0 tender locomotive built for theCantareira TramwayinBrazil. During its long life it has hauled passengers, sugar, lime-stone and cement on various Brazilian lines, and is currentlyawaiting restoration. Modified at various times, and pairedwith different tenders, it is a superb project for modellers, in 16mm narrow gauge andlarger scales; in particular it lends itself to turning Don Young’s‘Lucky 7’into a tenderlocomotive, as the engine sections are very similar. In the 92 landscape A4 pages of thisbook Peter Manning provides 150 CAD drawings of the engine and its tenders, largelyto 1:24 scale with main dimensions shown. Plus there is an excellent history of thelocomotive and its environment by Nicholas Burman with 20 photographs, both B&Wand colour. Spiral bound with an acetate cover.(2nd printing in 6 months -slightly updated!)MINIATURESTEAM SERVICESOur last advert featured Kozo Hiraoka’s wonderfulbooks on building models of American gearedlocomotives - these two DVDs really show whatsuch locos did - and a whole lot more!West Coast Railroad Logging -Equipment and Techniques:Vol. 1• 72 mins•colour and B&W•stereo sound•£20.59Vol. 2• 78 mins•colour and B&W•stereo sound•£20.59Two extraordinary DVDs showing not just logging railroads onAmerica’s West Coast, but especially the whole range of techniquesused to fell and extract the timber from the woods to the railroad, anddown to, and through, the mill. The film shown dates from the early1900s to the mid 1960s and is of very high quality, as is the film’sproduction. The techniques covered in Vol. 1 include felling, toppingthe spar tree, rigging and the evolution of yarding. Vol. 2 includesbuilding the railroad - including inclines and cableways, parbucklingwrecks, plowing snow, log dumps and mills. Both films include a lot ofrailroad footage from many logging operations; Shays in particularabound, plus Mallets, Heislers, and rod locomotives. If you everwondered what logging was really like, these films will show you inconsiderable detail.Health and Safetycertainly wasn’t a concern ..........MAIL ORDER to:- Barrow Farm Rode Frome Somerset BA11 6UB Tel: 01373-830151... only in IndiaApp. 70 mins•Colour•stereo sound•DVD £20.59Very well made and shot film which is an ideal introduction to India’sfour narrow gauge mountain lines - theDarjeeling, Matheran, Nilgiri(orOoty)andShimlarailways. All are shown with steam-powered trains, although theMatheranline is shown using a Darjeeling Class ‘B’ asmotive power, its own O&K loco being out of service. What makesthis film that bit different from others is that it has more in the way oflineside shots, which really give you a feel for the countryside therailways operate through, and life going on around them. And if you are building aDarjeeling Class ‘B’ in any gauge, there is a lot of detail shown of these locos. There is ahuge amount to enjoy in this film; even the domestic authorities liked it!‘Todescribe this book as ‘entertaining’ is something ofan understatement. I truly recommend it to all’Review inMENo. 4508Der Tiger - designing, building and running the1/5 scale Wimmera Tiger tank•Dean•£17.30The full story behind Gerard Dean’s wonderous model of a GermanWW11Tigertank, which won the gold medal for Internal Combustionengines at the 2013 MODELENGINEEREXHIBITION. Started as a ‘quickie’project, Gerard got carried away and it took 10 years...... ‘Der Tiger isno “How to make a 1/5 scale model Tiger tank with V12 IC engine” butit does tell you how not to make one.’ This 250 kg monster is quite a machine! Thisbook is absolutely crammed full of ideas for any model engineer, electronics buff orradio-control one, and will serve as inspiration to anyone thinking that they have bittenoff more than they can chew and wondering what to do next. As a bonus, it is also veryamusing.A great read! 124 very well produced pages, crammed with diagrams and mainlycolour photographs. Steel•£20.15A reprint of the eighth (1954) edition of this wonderful book, revised andupdated by Greenly’s son-in-law Ernest A. Steel, and daughter Elenora, but still very much Henry’s work. Greenly’s experience of designing andbuilding model locomotives covered all gauges from Gauge 1 to 15" gauge;all are covered here, but the mid-range gauges are stressed. The first fourchapters cover choice of scale and gauge, locomotive types, principles of modellocomotive design and boiler design. Another twelve chapters cover specific parts ofthe locomotive. All are very fully illustrated with drawings, tables and photographs. Anybook which effectively remained in print over fifty years has to have been top quality, andthis is one of the very best books written on building model and miniature steamlocomotives, and an invaluable reference for locomotive builders in the 21st century.322 pages and paperback. The fire burns much better ...
