I was fortunate enoughto visit David Piddington, I plan to returnto further pick his brains and share someof his wonderful experiences withreaders. My other visit was to the fabled‘Bodger’s Lodge’, where I received anintroductory course in MIG welding fromJohn Stevenson. We both agreed that Iam not quite ready for Rolls Royce, butprogress was made! It turned out that themain problem I had been having wasbecause I hadn’t pushed the gas pipe allthe way into the fitting and most of myshielding gas was just contributing to thegreenhouse effect and not my welding! As my article explains I was able tofigure out how the machine should workon my own, but was not getting the sort ofwelds I had hoped for. But once I handedthe machine to John, he had me up andrunning in minutes and left me to practice. There’s a serious point here – an awfullot of readers are ‘lone hands’ and manyof them are largely self-taught. But everyso often we all come across problems orbarriers that need no more than a bit ofadvice or a gentle tweak on the controls. We all need a bit of help at times, andsometimes there’s no better solution thanhands on guidance. So whether you’re a horny handedveteran engineer or a total newbie, if youare struggling, don’t be afraid to ask forhelp, whether that’s through a forum likewww.model-engineer.co.uk,calling on afellow hobbyist or going along to yourlocal club.On theContact: www.myhobbystore.co.uk/contactWebsite: www.myhobbystore.co.uk/magazinesContact: www.myhobbystore.co.uk/contactWebsite: www.myhobbystore.co.uk/me-plansEditor:Neil WyattTel: +44 (0)1689 869 912Email: neil.wyatt@mytimemedia.comDesigner:Yvette GreenIllustrator:Grahame ChambersRetouching:Brian VickersAd Production:Robin GraySenior Account Manager:Duncan ArmstrongEmail: duncan.armstrong@mytimemedia.comTel: 01634 238893BACK ISSUES & BINDERSMODEL ENGINEERING PLANSEDITORIALPRODUCTIONADVERTISINGSNEAKING ONE INMARKETING & SUBSCRIPTIONSSubscription Manager:Kate HallPublisher:Julie MillerGroup Advertising Manager:Rhona BolgerEmail: rhona.bolger@mytimemedia.comChief Executive:Owen DaviesChairman:Peter HarknessMANAGEMENT© MyTimeMedia Ltd. 2015All rights reserved ISSN 0959-6909The Publisher’s written consent must be obtained before any part of thispublication may be reproduced in any form whatsoever, including photocopiers, and information retrieval systems. This isCaptain Baxter,an 0-4-0 tank locomotiveof diminutive size. The locomotive was originally used by Dorking Greystone LimeWorks. Numbered 3 the little tank loco was built in 1877 by Fletcher Jennings & Co. attheir Lowca Works in Whitehaven. The loco was joined the Bluebell Railway in 1960, was restored for 1982, and wasfully overhauled in 2005, and it is now capable of hauling small passenger trains. Awonderful little chunk of the past.I find it hard to believe, but I took this photo back in the spring of 1989 when I hadtwo weeks off between jobs! The film used was Fujichrome Velvia, a wonderfultransparency film, which shows incredible detail. This was taken with my lovely oldPentax SP1000 using an unbeatable Helios 58mm lens from a Zenit TTL.December 20153THE SOUTH’S MAJOR SHOWCASE OFRIDAY 15th -SUNDAY 17thJANUARY 2016www.londonmodelengineering.co.ukOne ShThefeaturedAson BBCowA GREAT DAY OUT FOR ALL AGESAlexandra PalaceLondonN22 7AYJoin us for our 20th year of the London ModelEngineering Exhibition.
