Foreword
FOREWORD
The first five-volume edition on openings
was published in Yugoslavia in the 1970s-
1980s. All of the volumes went into a second
edition. But the theory of openings develops
so quickly that this fundamental edition is
today only of historical interest. The reader of
"Modem Chess Opening" will find in the
Encyclopaedia the latest information on the
subject.
The aforecited Yugoslav "Encyclopaedia
of Chess Openings" may be found in the
libraries of many Soviet (Russian) chess
players. In the past our chess players actively
used this popular foreign edition. Today, we
are sort of paying our debt to foreign
colleagues... The Encyclopaedia is published
in Russia, its authors comprise former Soviet
chess masters and grandmasters, prominent
theorists, and specialists in openings'
variants, including Y.Balashov, A.Belyavsky,
A.Vyzhmanavin, V.Epishin, I.Zaitsev,
S.Makarychev, E.Sveshnikov, A.Khalifman.
There is no doubt that the Russian
Encyclopaedia "Modem Chess Openings"
will be a success both in Russia, and in all
countries where chess is a popular game.
Traditionally, the openings are
divided into three groups: open,
semiopen and closed. This division
formed during the last century and the
beginning of this century when the
opening move 1. e4 was considered
almost obligatory. l...e5 in return
practically spelled an open game. Other
responses implied a semi-open version;
the rest of the openings (whose share
was small) were classified as closed.
Afterwards, the situation changed:
closed openings were becoming more
popular. As an illustration, let us recall
the major chess events of the last
decade: five world championship
matches between Karpov and Kasparov.
They played 144 games, and the
statistics of the openings are as follows:
open -
Every stage in a chess game - the
opening, the middlegame, and the ending -
is very important. The opening, however,
holds a special place because positional or
material losses at the beginning of the game
make the player feel uncomfortable in the
middlegame, and may even deprive him of
the opportunity to reach the ending. So,
without knowing how to open a game well the
player can hardly count on a successful chess
career.
For this reason, books and monographs on
the theory of the opening are in high demand
not only among chess players in general, but
also among chess masters and grandmasters.
As the theory and practice of the opening
game constantly develop, one may say that
this stage in the game is never overlooked by
chess players: they study it all their life.
Missing a thing or two in this area leads to a
danger of being unable to keep up with the
modem level. Even a highly talented master
like Robert Fischer could not "make up for
lost time": recall his second match with Boris
Spassky.
No doubt, an encyclopaedia in a specific
field of intellectual human activity is the
highest form of literature on the respective
subject. It .is distinguished both for the vast
wealth of the collected material, and for the
depth and width of analysis. It stands to
reason, that chess theory is no exception,
especially, as concerns its most developed
component - the opening game. Every ac-
tive chess player dreams of buying an ency-
clopaedia on openings. Therefore, its publi-
cation is an important event in chess life.
Paradoxical as it is, no attempt has ever
been made in this country to compile and
publish an encyclopaedia on openings,
although the USSR has been for many
decades the world leader in chess trends (a
good deal has been written about the triumph
of the Soviet chess school worldwide). At
last, Russia has decided to fill this gap: an
encyclopaedia on openings is now being
published in Moscow.
