It’s an attempt to feel physically connected to the history of theplace, to the mason, who, hundreds of years ago, shaped it, to themen who lifted it into place. What stories that stone could tell… it’s witnessed hundreds of years ofhistory, the rise and fall of empires, and huge changes in society.Buildings give us the chance to ‘see’ history. Surviving structuresprovide evidence of the Romans, the Anglo Saxons, the Normans, theTudors and so on. We can study surviving relics and make educatedguesses about how the inhabitants lived, even the inhabitants froma thousand years ago.The railway is undoubtedly the legacy that the Victorians left behind. It’sa blend of the technological achievement they made combined with theirsense of style and grandeur. The railway was not just a mode of transport,it was a symbol of the age, a monument to man’s dominion over nature. And that attitude continues today.Railway builders aren’t fazed by anything. The Victorian’s “we canbridge that valley” or “we’ll tunnel through that” approach has gifted ussome simply superb memorials to the railway age that can’t fail to inspire.Take the Forth Bridge for example. Surely, there was a simpler way toJanuary 2016cross it? But no, a mammoth steel cantilever bridge was deemed to be thebest. It’s also a fantastic statement - it was Victorian Britain showing theworld: “Look at what we can do!”And it will continue to show generations to come. But we don’t just stop at the Victorians. We still have that “we can doanything” attitude.Crossing the English Channel? No problem, we can tunnel under it. Newcross-London railway? We’ll just tunnel under the capital city. Cross theMedway valley? We’ll just build a bridge.A tunnel is pretty much the one constant in model railways. Whateveryou’re modelling, you’ll need a tunnel to disguise your fiddleyard. Mostlayouts also feature a bridge, if only for the interest of the bridge itself. We’ve scoured the country to bring you the most inspirational bridgesand tunnels we could find. We’ve tried to look beyond the obvious so there’sno Royal Albert or Forth Bridge - we’ve featured them already inModel Rail- but these other subjects are just as impressive and inspirational. And, in this issue, to complement the real bridges and tunnels, we’vegathered some of the best bridge and tunnel building techniques from thetraditional to the new.
